REFURBISHING A NEGLECTED HOSPITAL IN TANZANIA
This is an amazing story of a holistic programme of intervention to reduce child mortality in Tanzania.
The island of Ukerewe (population 350,000), in Lake Victoria has a neglected hospital with very poor facilities. One in twelve children born in the hospital dies due to lack of facilities.
We sent, in September 2009, a 40 foot container with essential medical equipments worth $400,000. In November, a team of 24 volunteers went there to refurbish the operating theatre and labour rooms, and launched a programme for malaria eradication and health education.
Plans are afoot to arrange a bigger renovation programme next year with plenty of opportunity for volunteering. See below for more project information. Contact John for further details.
